A sports clubhouse goes digital – and immediately saves energy and costs
A sports club in Hesse has demonstrated just how simple and effective the digitalisation of an existing building can be.
The clubhouse dates back to the 1960s and, from an energy standpoint, reflects a situation many clubs know well: an older building structure, very little insulation, and high consumption levels. That combination made it an ideal candidate for the Sensise solution—high potential, low complexity, and fast results.
The perfect starting point for Sensise
The clubhouse has around 300 m² of usable space and—typical for a building from that period—had an energy consumption level of approximately 270 kWh per square meter. This clearly places it in energy efficiency class H, the lowest category and the one with the highest realistic savings potential.
For Sensise, this was an almost perfect scenario:
clear consumption patterns
no complex building technology
significant optimization potential
very fast implementation
Record-time implementation: fully digital—in just 2 weeks
The club decided to fully digitize the clubhouse. The solution included:
15 intelligent radiator actuators
1 gateway for secure connectivity
Sensise software for automated heating optimization
indoor climate sensors for continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, and occupancy
energy monitoring sensors for gas, water, and electricity, all connected via LoRaWAN interfaces
This gave the club a complete, centrally controllable solution for heating control, indoor climate monitoring, and energy analysis—without structural alterations and without interfering with the building systems.
The entire project—from the initial site visit to fully automated control—was completed within two weeks. For day-to-day sports operations, that meant no interruptions, no construction work, and no complexity.
Results: immediate, noticeable savings
Once activated, the system automatically began optimizing heating schedules, room temperatures, and usage patterns.
As a result, the club now saves around €1,700 per year—without any loss of comfort and without any additional effort.
Financial benefits and ROI
Thanks to the high optimization potential and the moderate investment, the project pays for itself very quickly:
Annual savings: approx. €1,700
ROI: after 1.6 years
Savings after 5 years: around €3,400
Savings after 10 years: around €8,500
This clearly shows that the older and less efficient a building is, the more worthwhile digitization becomes.
CO₂ benefits included
As energy consumption decreases, the building’s CO₂ emissions are automatically reduced as well—by several tons every year. Over a period of ten years, that is equivalent to the carbon absorption of more than 2,500 newly planted trees.
Conclusion: a flagship project for clubs and municipalities
This example shows how fast, cost-effective, and impactful digital heating optimization can be—especially in older existing buildings where traditional renovation measures are expensive or difficult to implement.
Today, the clubhouse saves money, energy, and CO₂—thanks to a solution that was implemented in just two weeks, creates full transparency, and delivers immediate results.
